There were great options to choose from. New colors I didn’t have, all sorts of fabrics, it was a wide array of beautiful clothing.  And then I came across the plaid below.  A bright and bold button down plaid with a hood?  Hallelujah! Let the world rejoice.

A light weight plaid with a hood? It's like the best ice cream with the best toppings on the best summer day.

Did you ever tell someone that you love something, and the next thing you know, you had an embarrassment of riches? That for every holiday, or heck, whenever someone sees one of these objects, they buy it for you? Such is me with plaid. I finally had to tell my family members to quit buying me plaid! But of course, not because I don’t adore plaid – but because my closet (and home, and heck – DOG) were overflowing with it.

So that may explain why I, in fact, own a formal dress in plaid. I mean…who does that? Hi, I’m Kat, and I have a plaid problem. I love it so much, in fact, that in honor of Plaidurday, I donned not one, but two items of plaid! Some might say it’s a ‘fashion don’t’ – I say, it’s a fashion AWESOME. I hope you enjoy as much as I did!

Almost a year ago, my door bell rang, I opened my front door and was greeted by a perfectly folded plaid red flannel from my dear friend Bugsy (your Plaidurday founder). He got a matching shirt for himself because that is what friends do; they buy matching clothes. This shirt is my absolute favorite article of clothing . . . ever. If Bugsy is ever wearing this shirt it is likely that I am wearing it too because I have worn it for nearly every day in the last year. I wear it as soon as I get home from work; I wear it on warm days; I wear on chilly days; I was wearing it on New Year’s Eve and New Years Day; I wear it unwashed and I wear it clean. Wearing the combination of plaid flannel should be the definition of comfort.

It is hard for me to describe what plaid flannel can do to a person. With the aid of a few of photographs I am going to describe what plaid flannel can do for YOU.

With the first ever Plaidurday nearly upon us, I decided to pay homage to a few favorite moments of plaid on Television and Film. There are a fair amount of plaid outfits showcased in the “moving picture” and yes, even “talkies,” and it is high time someone showed them a bit of love.

Here are seven eight of my favorite Plaid Moments in a Television Show or Film. But first, want to hear more about plaid? Bugsy chatted with Kat and I about Plaidurday on a recent episode of Ginger and the Geek.

1. Al Czervik in Caddyshack.

Just look at this jacket. What is not to love? Al Czervik (played by Rodney Dangerfield) in Caddyshack is a favorite character of mine, and honestly, so is his dinner jacket. He celebrates the plaid, and how.

2. Pete in Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks is not wanting for plaid in the least, but one of my favorite plaid-clad characters is Pete (Jack Nance). He has many classic lines throughout the show, “She’s dead…wrapped in plastic,” and “The King and I!” are favorites.

3. Bob and Doug McKenzie in Strange Brew

Two of Canada’s favorite sons, Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) go on a plaid filled adventure against a wicked brewmaster in this hilarious beer-soaked comedy-adventure story.

4. The kilts in Highlander

Since Highlander (“A documentary, filmed in real-time,” according to Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s Master Shake) takes place in Scotland, there is plenty of plaid to go around. This reminds me of a joke: A woman goes up to a man in a kilt and asks, “Excuse me sir, but what is worn beneath your kilt?” he answers, “Worn? Madam, nothing is worn. Everything is in perfect working order.” Thank you, and good night.

5. George Nada in They Live

Roddy Piper plays George Nada in John Carpenter’s They Live, and to use his most popular line in the film, he’s here to “kick ass and chew bubble gum” and he’s all outta gum.

6. Flintheart Glomgold in DuckTales

Flintheart is Scrooge McDuck’s foil in the cartoon DuckTales, and with his kilt, is one of only a few Disney duck characters to wear some sort of clothing below the waist.

7. “Straight to Plaid” in Spaceballs

Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis, again) proclaims light speed to be “too slow” and demands Spaceball One go right to Ludicrous Speed–a speed so fast, the star field changes from lines of white light to colorful plaid. Just make sure to wear your seat belt.

8. The Lumberjack Song by Monty Python

Ah, yes. The Lumberjack Song remains a classic example of Monty Python’s absurd humor–but, there is also a bit of lovely plaid. Good show, boys.

There you have it, a list of some of my favorite “moments of plaid” as seen on TV or the silver screen. Other honorable mentions listed when I crowdsourced about this post include: Braveheart (aka Plaid: The Movie) and some of the outfits in Clueless.

There were more, but I ain’t got time to type them up. There’s plaid that needs wearing. Go forth and wrap thyself in plaid!

Trends come and go every season, but plaid remains the new black, year-round.

An extremely versatile pattern, plaid can be dressed up or down. Grab that crisp, fitted white plaid shirt and team it with black cigarette pants for the board meeting on Monday morning. Paint the town red on Friday night with that sweet madras plaid shirt on your back!

If I could only wear one pattern forever, I would choose plaid for sure. I build my plaid wardrobe palette around colours that work for me. From icy hues to dark tones, there’s a gorgeous plaid for everyone. Here on our sunny little island (read: city of sweltering heat), comfortable cotton plaid shirts are definite closet staples. We wear our plaid throughout the year. Just look at what’s in my closet!

While Googling plaid sometime in May, I stumbled upon Plaidurday and instantly pledged to join in the inaugural worldwide celebration of plaid on Friday, 7 October 2011. On Plaidurday, everyone will wear plaid – plaid shirts, plaid bags, plaid headbands, plaid nails – I even have a plaid dialer on my phone! There are plaid windows in my office lobby, and when sunlight filters through the glass, plaid shadows adorn the marble floor. Plaid is everywhere.

Whether it’s tartan, buffalo, madras, or glen, break out your plaid today! Wear it every day, or as often as you can. Embrace plaid!

Finally, here’s wishing everybody a Happy Plaidurday!

In 1993 the Portland, Oregon rock band Everclear released their debut album, “World of Noise”. However, the band wouldn’t see great commercial success until their follow-up album “Sparkle and Fade”.

Well on that first album was a “Sparkle”, and from my research it seemed that it was Art Alexakis who wrote most of the band’s lyrics.  I haven’t been able to find otherwise for this song. My beef with the song is in the lyrics …

“I’m embarrassed by the plaid you wear”

Art, did you really write this? And who was it?

1993 was certainly a long time ago, but I feel you shouldn’t be embarrassed by anyone who is wearing plaid.  You should be proud of them. It’s a noble thing and you should probably hug people tighter and longer if they are wearing plaid, it’s a good practice.

It appears you have since embraced plaid yourself. This photo, much more recent than 1993 shows you looking quite proud of the plaid shirt you’re wearing.  I have to say it looks very good on you. I hope you keep wearing plaid good sir, but perhaps you could apologize to the subject of this song, as you really shouldn’t have been embarrassed by it, but ecstatic by their stylish choices!
